She leaned back into the leather seat, letting her thoughts blur. Past and present bled into each other—then stretched forward, into the vague shape of what might come. She remembered being small on the shores of Lanikai, dancing barefoot through the sparkling turquoise shallows, the powdery white sand curling between her toes, sunlight warming her bare shoulders. The Mokulua Islands drifted like dreams in the distance—just like she remembered them.
