Just then a premonition, not a déjà vu, or maybe a déjà vu—Ray couldn’t decide what it was, so he just labeled it a feeling. A feeling of now and not-now washed over him and a sensation/remembrance of what he thought to be this very moment occurring. The bells above the café door hadn’t rung yet, but somehow they knew. Kai’s hand dropped from his arm like she’d touched fire, and the laughter that had danced between them seconds ago collapsed into something awkward and thin.
